A Small Chapter Living a Big Mission
(Article for the National Philoptochos Philanthropy Witness Newsletter - May 2026)
At St. Irene Philoptochos Society, service is not measured by size, but by faith in action.
Though small in number, this devoted chapter maintains a deeply rooted and highly visible presence within its parish, responding with compassion to both ongoing needs and unexpected hardships. Whether offering encouragement to those facing illness or loss, or providing direct financial assistance, St. Irene Philoptochos stands as a steady source of care within its parish family. In the past year alone, the chapter contributed grocery gift cards to support parish benevolence efforts, donated to the parish’s annual fundraiser, and raised over $1,000 to assist a family in crisis. In a particularly meaningful act of mercy, members came together to help an impoverished parishioner by fundraising for funeral expenses and providing a cemetery plot-an expression of dignity, love, and unwavering support during a time of loss.
Faith is also expressed through the sacred rhythms of the Church. From baking Vasilopita each January to preparing the parish for Great Lent, Holy Week, and Pascha, the chapter plays an essential role in the spiritual life of the community. Members gather to decorate the Epitaphio on Holy Friday, beautify the church for the Resurrection, and extend Paschal joy to those unable to attend services through thoughtful outreach to seniors and shut-ins.
St. Irene Philoptochos also nurtures the next generation. The chapter actively supports its Sunday School program by maintaining classrooms, providing Christmas gifts, hosting a graduation luncheon, and honoring graduating seniors with monetary awards. College students studying away from home remain connected through cards and care packages-reminders that their church family continues to support and pray for them.
Beyond the parish, the chapter’s outreach reflects a deep commitment to serving Christ in others. Through its “Feeding the Hungry” initiative, members and parishioners come together multiple times each year to prepare and deliver meals to those experiencing food insecurity throughout the San Bernardino community-providing over 600 meals in 2025 alone, along with essential hygiene items to restore dignity and care.
Their compassion extends to vulnerable families through support of Mary’s Haven, offering essential items to mothers and children working toward stability and independence. The chapter also remains committed to the future of the Church, supporting seminarians through the Bishop Anthony Student Aid Endowment Fund and the Adopt-a-Student program at Hellenic College Holy Cross.
In the broader community, St. Irene Philoptochos participates in philanthropic efforts that bring hope and healing to those in need. Members raised funds and walked in support of cancer patients through the Believe Walk, contributed to the Children’s Medical Fund, and hosted a Winter Gala that raised $11,000 to benefit the Kids ‘n’ Cancer Ministry and Camp Agape-offering strength and support to children and families facing serious illness.
Equally important to their mission is cultivating an active and engaged membership. Through fellowship events, educational efforts, and welcoming gatherings such as their Membership Coffee Hour, the chapter continues to grow while strengthening bonds within the parish. Their celebration of National Philoptochos Day served as both a reflection of their ministry and an invitation for others to join in a life of service.
Throughout every initiative - whether feeding the hungry, supporting families in crisis, enriching parish life, or nurturing future generations - St. Irene Philoptochos Society embodies the spirit of Philoptochos with humility, generosity, and unwavering faith.
Small in number, but powerful in purpose, they truly live as an “Army of Agape.”

Every time I watch this video, I am filled with inspiration, hope and love.
We are here today to reflect on the power of charity, the strength of our faith, and the endless potential we have to make a difference in the lives of others.
Philoptochos, meaning "Friend of the Poor," is not just an organization. It is a movement of the heart to serve those in need. A calling to lift up the vulnerable, to offer comfort to the suffering, and to be a light of hope in times of hardship and despair. It is an invitation for each of us to live out the teachings of Christ, by putting our Faith into Action!
As we look to the example of Christ, we are reminded that He came not to be served, but to serve—to heal the sick, feed the hungry, and comfort the weary. He showed us that true greatness lies in humility, in compassion, and in the selfless giving of ourselves for the sake of others. Through His love and His sacrifices, He set before us the perfect model of what it means to be a servant to all.
The work we do in Philoptochos is not just about giving and providing for physical needs; it is about uplifting the soul. Philoptochos is about creating a ripple effect of kindness, love, and hope that extends far beyond our immediate circle. When we reach out to those who are suffering—whether it be through financial support, emotional encouragement, or spiritual guidance—we remind them that they are never alone. God is with them, and so are we.
Today, I ask each of you to reflect on the countless ways you can make a difference. Think of the person who may be struggling in silence, the family that feels lost, or the community that is in need of a helping hand. How can we, reach out and make a lasting impact? It starts with love, compassion, and the willingness to serve. It is with strength in our Faith, Hope in our abilities to do Good Works and Love for one another that we exemplify true philanthropy. Together, we can continue the work of our Lord and transform lives, one act of kindness at a time. We are the Army of Agape!
May the love of Christ continue to inspire us all, and may we find joy in the opportunity to serve others as He has served us.
